How In The World Do We Decide?

"We inherited a severe recession form our predecessor and we acted quickly to reduce the unacceptably high levels of unemployment and to stimulate the economy. It's working." Sound familiar? These words were taken from the Democratic platform for the 1980 Presidential Election! In the same election, the Republicans were going to: reduce taxes; fix welfare; deal with healthcare and education; address veterans benefits; deal with women's rights; and protect your privacy!

That's right! The candidate near you was promising to fix these problems - 32 years ago - and they are still not fixed. But hey, if they fixed these things what would they run on in the next election? Worse yet, what would all of these talking heads and pundits who appear 24 hours a day, have to talk about? Wow, heaven forbid some of them might even have to get a job.

Have you ever wondered how much these 20 something party spokespersons are paid? After all one only needs to memorize the faxed memos you get in the morning, appear on one of the many, endless cable news shows, and recite the words by rote with facial emphasis that will convince the audience you really believe the dribble you are spewing! The more believable you are, the more you will be invited. There are usually two of them on at once,  fair and balanced you know, and the segment ends with "great debate, guys".  I've often wondered if these pundits and spokespersons really knew more than those actually running for office why they didn't get in the race themselves. Probably below their pay grades!

I'm speculating on all this because my daughter asked me if voting for these two candidates wasn't really a vote to choose between "two evils" and I didn't have a good answer. She also wondered about sending a message by voting for a third party candidate. Unfortunately, this strategy usually results in the Third party helping one or the other major candidates win. How then do we decide who we will support for office? Well, if you live in a red state or a blue state you don't have a choice according to the polls and the pundits! It's already ordained who will win in those states. Wow! Doesn't that bother you? It does me! If true, then the election will be decided in only a few "battleground states". But wait a minute, there are certainly "red folks" and "blue folks" whose votes are already decided then who ..... oh, independent voters in those states will decide. So let me get this straight, a few people in a few states like Iowa and Missouri will decide who is to be our President? Make sense to you?

What does it take to make you angry anyway?

If you want an example of your choice this time, read the attached Bloomberg article on the plans offered by your next President!
